I did my feature on a girl that I heard about through my
landlord and volleyball coach. She is a new recruit to the Wayne State volleyball team and dealing with all the stress that comes with being a student athlete. Along with those hardships she is being kicked out for having a brand new puppy, though her landlord originally said that she could originally could have a dog. Why? Because of its breed, a pit
bull.
I can safely say that it was awkward, knocking on these young
adults home and asking if I could take a picture of them and their dog for an
assignment. Yet, they were more then gracious, letting me come in and take as many
pictures as I wanted. I found it tough to take pictures of the oh-so-rambunctious
Cali, considering she didn’t tend to sit still for more then a second. I also
found it tough to find this story and to get both of the students to open up
about their experience falling in love with their dog, and having to choose
between giving up their great apartment. At one point Brittany, the mother of
Cali, shed a tear talking about their experience, and the issues they were about to embark on.
Trying to remember everything that we have learned as
students in class is extremely tough when you’re trying to take pictures in a
live setting. It’s not like I could pose them and ask them to wait, I had to
just figure it out as I went.
For my feature event I shot a yoga class that was solely for
LGBT support. It was an awesome event with great lighting and incredibly fun to
shoot. Everyone was extremely happy to share their point of view, and more then
happy to have their picture taken for recognition.
In conclusion, feature hunting is tough! It’s not easy to
get a slice of life, you have to hunt and it can be awkward but the more
pictures I took the better I felt about it.
